Capturing Fireworks on your Phone

I am so excited for the 4th to be here.  The fire roasted hotdogs and smores,  smoked meats, the smell of grills being cooked on, friends and family all gathered around in the backyard, fire pit swings (yes the Pinterest one I'm so very lucky to have a husband that loves building things) and of course FIREWORKS.

You might be thinking "I can't take good firework pictures I just have a phone not a fancy dlsr."  Well my friend, you can't be more wrong.  You can capture great firework shots on your phone.  The secret? Slow your shutter speed!  What the heck am I talking about?  Haha I will show you.  Samsung users can use their normal camera app.  iPhone users will have to get a new app like "Slow Shutter Cam" or "Camera+"
You will also need some way to steady your phone on a tripod or some make shift device that insures your phone will not move.  You will not be able to hand hold your phone, it will not turn out.
For Samsung go to your Pro setting pictured on the left.  Then choose a slow shutter speed and an ISO of around 200.  Shutter Speed is circled and ISO has an arrow.  10 seconds is the longest my shutter will stay open on just my regular camera.  Different apps may give you longer speed settings.  I have not messed with any camera apps, as I have been very satisfied with the one that came with my phone.

For iPhone users after you download an app like Slow Shutter Cam or Camera+ you should get similar options like the one above.  If you know of any other good iPhone apps feel free to comment below for other iPhone users.  This is just not a phone I am very familiar with.

So, now you've got your camera settings down, and have a sturdy place to set your phone.  Now to figure out where the fireworks will be in the sky and set your phone up in a good position so that it will capture the fireworks.  Then, all that's left is to take the picture, and make sure you do not move or shake the camera until it has finished taking the photo.

Whats on your photography bookshelf?

Some of the most useful books that I have are these two books.  Understanding Exposure helped me out when I was just beginning.  The book of Legal Forms I use all the time and keep it on hand for references.      Some more books I use all the time are the 500 posing series.  I look over them almost every session I have to get fresh ideas.    These next two are older books that were given to me early in my photography journey.  Photographing Children is not one that I would recommended today.  It's outdated and has some controversial images for today's world.   The Art of Black and White Photography is outdated but has some really good information and some great black and white photos.  I love a good black and white.     What photography books do love and hate? No Script

Sitting here trying to think of my first blog post. I think I will just leave ya'll with this quote. I have no script, nothing planned out, just living day to day doing what I love, soaking in all the knowledge I can.
